A ROBUST 5G infrastructure will be crucial in driving the digitalisation of the agricultural sector, offering farmers the chance to engage in the digital era and potentially maximise their profits.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo stated that the ministry would act as a platform to connect all economic sectors with the Internet of Things (IOT) and enhance digital connectivity.
“The ministry and its agencies will become a one-stop centre to advance the country’s digitalisation rate. We will work across all sectors, linking government machinery with the private sector to boost connectivity and IOT usage,” he said. Gobind was speaking at the launch of a collaboration between telco giant CelcomDigi Berhad and BoomGrow Productions Sdn Bhd for sustainable agriculture at Gurney Paragon in Penang.
A report from November 2021, titled “Estimating the Economic Impact of the Single Wholesale 5G Network in Malaysia,” projected a 2.6% increase in digital applications contributing to the agriculture sector’s GDP by 2030. “This equates to a RM3.5 billion incremental uplift,” said Gobind, adding that utilising technology will not only preserve the environment but also secure food supply, strengthen the economy, and position Malaysia as a leader in sustainable agriculture in Southeast Asia.
He expressed hope that this initiative would encourage more farmers to adapt and adopt digital solutions. Farming in Malaysia contributed 7.2% to the nation’s GDP in the second quarter of this year, a significant increase from 1.7% in the first quarter.
“By digitalising farming methods, I am confident the agriculture sector will be able to contribute more to the nation’s GDP. The journey towards realising the full benefits of 5G must involve collaboration between the public and private sectors,” he said.
Gobind also urged more corporate companies to explore innovative and creative 5G models that can drive entrepreneurship and create new business opportunities. — August 31, 2024.
