Rafizi launches petition urging public support for judicial independence
This petition is a public expression of our collective will to safeguard the independence of the judiciary, Rafizi says - July 11, 2025

PANDAN Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has launched an online petition calling on Malaysians to demonstrate their support for the independence and integrity of the country’s judiciary.

The move comes amid intensifying national debate over judicial appointments and institutional autonomy, ahead of a peaceful march organised by the Malaysian Bar Council on 14 July.

“This petition is a public expression of our collective will to safeguard the independence of the judiciary,” Rafizi said in a Facebook post on Friday. “Following the 7 July 2025 press conference by PKR MPs, we are now moving forward with this petition to show that Malaysians want a judiciary that is free and credible.”

He urged the public not only to sign the petition but to help circulate it widely, emphasising the broader implications for Malaysian democracy.

“This is not merely a political issue,” he said. “It has long-term consequences for our democratic institutions, our justice system, and the rule of law.”

Rafizi’s initiative aligns with growing concern within legal and civil society circles regarding vacancies in senior judicial positions and delays in appointments, which the Bar Council says threaten public confidence in the judiciary’s independence.

The Bar’s march next week from the Palace of Justice to the Prime Minister’s Office will include the submission of a memorandum calling for urgent action to protect the judiciary from political interference. - July 11, 2025
