THE Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC) and the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance bilateral cooperation in competition law enforcement and policy development.

The signing took place during the 13th Seoul International Competition Forum at The Shilla Seoul, Korea. Tan Sri Idrus Harun, Chairman of MyCC, signed the MoU on behalf of Malaysia, while KFTC Chairman Dr Kijeong Han signed on behalf of South Korea.

The ceremony was witnessed by Datuk Haji Iskandar Ismail, Chief Executive Officer of MyCC, and Mr Dongryeul Shin, Director-General of KFTC.

“This MoU provides a structured framework for collaboration, including the exchange of non-confidential information on legal developments and cases, technical cooperation to build enforcement capacity, joint expert meetings and participation in mutually relevant international events,” said MyCC in a statement.

Both agencies also committed to supporting cross-border initiatives addressing anti-competitive practices, reflecting a shared vision for a resilient enforcement regime and strengthened regional cooperation.

“The partnership enables Malaysia to tap into South Korea’s extensive experience in merger control as MyCC prepares to implement its own merger regime by 2026,” said Tan Sri Idrus.

“KFTC was established in 1981 and has since become a leading competition authority not only in Asia but globally. Our collaboration began several years ago.

In 2019, KFTC seconded an expert to MyCC under its Expert Dispatch Programme, through which we gained valuable insights into bid rigging and merger control,” he said.

He added that the MoU marks a logical progression in deepening this cooperation, enabling both agencies to benefit from each other’s expertise and contribute towards the development of competition policy both domestically and at the international level.

“This collaboration allows us to advance competition policy not only within our jurisdictions, but also on a regional and global scale,” Idrus said. - Sept 3, 2025
