PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to securing the release of 23 nationals detained by Israeli forces while participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) humanitarian mission to Gaza.

According to Sumud Nusantara Command Centre (SNCC) director-general Datuk Dr Sani Araby Abdul Alim, the prime minister personally contacted him at 8.10am today to request updates on the well-being of all Malaysian activists and their families.

“As the main patron of the Sumud Nusantara Humanitarian Mission, he enquired about the well-being of the activists’ families, their health conditions, and conveyed his regards, while giving full assurance,” Sani Araby said in a statement.

Anwar, he added, has engaged in diplomatic discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Abdulrahman Al Thani, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to seek their assistance in securing the Malaysians' release.

All 23 Malaysian participants in the flotilla, which carried over 500 activists from 44 countries, have been confirmed detained by Israel and are expected to be deported via a third country, according to the Foreign Ministry. The flotilla aimed to deliver essential aid and demonstrate solidarity with Palestinians under Israeli siege in Gaza.

Sani Araby also announced that a press conference would be held at 4pm to provide further updates on the unfolding situation.

Public Urged to Rally Responsibly

Meanwhile, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has urged Malaysians to uphold public order during any gatherings in support of the detained activists.

His remarks followed a rally held in front of the United States Embassy, where some individuals reportedly obstructed police officers during the demonstration.

“The peaceful assembly organised by some Malaysians is a right guaranteed by the Federal Constitution, and it reflects our solidarity with the humanitarian cause in Palestine,” said Saifuddin.

“However, I strongly condemn the irresponsible actions of certain individuals who attempted to obstruct members of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) from performing their duties.”

He affirmed that while peaceful assembly is a democratic right, it must be exercised within the bounds of the law. The government, he said, will continue to prioritise the safety of Malaysians abroad and work through all diplomatic and legal channels to hold Israel accountable.

“They are unarmed civilians on a humanitarian mission, solely to deliver much-needed aid to the people of Gaza,” he said.

Saifuddin reiterated Malaysia’s unwavering support for Palestine, stating: “Malaysia will remain steadfast in standing with the Palestinian people until justice and freedom are achieved.” - October 3, 2025
