A 29-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested in Ipoh after allegedly injuring both his parents with a samurai sword during a violent incident at their home in Bandar Baru Putra, prompting a police investigation into the suspect’s mental state and motive.
The attack occurred early on Friday morning at a house along Persiaran Putra. Ipoh district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said police received an emergency call via the 999 hotline at about 6.41am, after which officers were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Preliminary investigations found that the suspect attacked his parents, both aged 57, causing serious injuries.
“After the incident, the suspect fled by climbing over a wall and onto the roof of the house before entering a nearby neighbour’s home,” Abang Zainal said.
“However, the suspect was successfully tracked down and arrested by officers from the Tanjung Rambutan police station at the neighbour’s house without any untoward incident,” he said when contacted by reporters.
Both victims were rushed to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh for further treatment and were reported to be in stable condition.
Abang Zainal said initial inquiries also revealed that the suspect has a record of mental health treatment and had previously received care at a psychiatric hospital.
“In his statement, the suspect claimed he was not aware of his actions and felt as though he was being chased by ghosts at the time of the incident,” he said.
He added that further investigations are ongoing to determine the true motive behind the attack.
“The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt using a dangerous weapon,” he said.
Police have advised the public not to speculate about the case in a manner that could interfere with investigations, and urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
“Police will continue to monitor developments in this case and firm action will be taken in accordance with existing laws,” he said. - December 27, 2025
