PENANG ushered in the Lunar New Year with a grand celebration at Setia SPICE Arena, drawing thousands of residents and visitors to mark the Year of the Horse.
The annual Chinese New Year open house, usually held on the second day of the festival, was brought forward to the first day this year due to the upcoming Ramadan fasting period.
The event was graced by the presence of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Ramli Ngah Talib, and his consort Toh Puan Noora Ashikin Raja Abdullah, alongside Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who is currently serving his final term as the state’s top executive.
Chow was visibly delighted by the turnout, noting the strong sense of togetherness and harmony among Malaysians and foreigners from all walks of life.
“I am very happy with the Chinese New Year Open House at Setia SPICE Arena today. The turnout was amazing, definitely a hike from last year. Thank you to all who have made this a success,” Chow told the media, praising the overwhelming attendance and the enthusiasm of the guests.
Chow revealed that the initial target for the open house was 10,000 guests, but the number exceeded expectations, reflecting the public’s eagerness to come together in celebration.
“There was an increase in the turnout, the reception was warm, and the performances also showcased the incredible talent of our performers, all of whom are Penangites,” he added.
The chief minister emphasised that the gathering symbolised more than just festivity; it represented the unity and community spirit that defines Penang and Malaysia as a whole.
“All in all, it was a successful Chinese New Year celebration. We managed to bring people of all races and backgrounds under one roof. This reflects the community spirit and unity in Malaysia, and Penang has always been exemplary in highlighting such events where people of all races come together as one,” he said.
The open house also saw attendance from several senior state leaders and dignitaries, including Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Mohamad Abdul Hamid, Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo, Penang State Secretary Datuk Seri Zulkifli Long, State Legislative Speaker Datuk Seri Law Choo Kiang, former chief minister Lim Guan Eng, and Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong.
Observers noted that such large-scale gatherings often serve as a barometer of public support for politicians, particularly amid speculation of a possible snap general election later this year. - February 18, 2026
