THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating a viral social media video containing alleged false or misleading information about sales and service tax (SST) and income tax relief under Budget 2027.
The commission said it had received public complaints about the video and referred the matter to the Finance Ministry for further examination.
It is also assessing the video’s content, the context in which it was circulated and its potential impact on the public.
“Further action will be considered if there are violations of the laws in force, including Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588],” MCMC said in a statement today.
It warned that the spread of misleading information could confuse the public about national tax policies, trigger unwarranted concern and influence financial decisions based on inaccurate claims.
MCMC said freedom of expression must be exercised responsibly and should not be abused to spread false information that could undermine the public interest.
The Commission urged the public to verify information on Budget 2027 through the Finance Ministry’s official portal at [www.belanjawan.mof.gov.my](http://www.belanjawan.mof.gov.my), the sebenarnya.my fact-checking portal, the AIFA chatbot via WhatsApp at 03-8688 7997, and other relevant authorities’ official channels before believing or sharing it. - October 13, 2026
