THE Director of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, Kash Patel, has confirmed that the primary suspect in the fatal shooting of American conservative activist Charlie Kirk is now in custody with local authorities.
Kirk, aged 31 and a prominent figure in the American right-wing movement, was fatally shot while speaking at an outdoor event held at Utah Valley University, part of a national tour titled "The American Comeback Tour".
He was struck in the neck during his speech beneath a promotional tent and collapsed shortly thereafter. Video footage captured the moment he was shot and quickly evacuated by his private security team.
In an official statement shared on social media, Patel said: "The individual responsible for the horrific shooting that claimed the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody. Thank you to state and local authorities in Utah for their cooperation with the FBI."
Reuters reported on Thursday that the killing has sent shockwaves through the conservative movement. Former President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance both issued statements urging Americans to pray for Kirk’s family.
Trump described Kirk as "a great man and legend" and added, "No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie.
He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us." In tribute, Trump ordered that flags be flown at half-staff nationwide.
The identity of the suspect has not yet been made public, and authorities are continuing to investigate the motive. The FBI is reviewing video evidence and interviewing witnesses in what has been described as a high-priority case. The incident has reignited national concerns over the safety of political figures, particularly during campus events.
Charlie Kirk rose to national prominence as a conservative political commentator and activist. A native of Illinois, he co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012 at the age of 18 alongside Tea Party activist Bill Montgomery.
The organisation quickly grew into a major influence on college campuses, promoting right-wing causes and galvanising youth support for the Republican Party, particularly during Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.
In 2019, Kirk launched Turning Point Action, a non-profit advocacy group aimed at backing conservative candidates. His events, often likened to a fusion of political rallies and entertainment spectacles, drew large and energetic crowds, complete with loud music and pyrotechnics.
Kirk’s influence extended well beyond college campuses. With 5.3 million followers on X (formerly Twitter) and more than half a million monthly podcast listeners, his show "The Charlie Kirk Show" was among the most popular conservative radio programmes in the United States. He also authored or contributed to several books, including ‘Time for a Turning Point’ and ‘The College Scam’.
He was recently on an international speaking tour, having headlined an event in Tokyo organised by Japan’s far-right Sanseito party and spoken in South Korea before returning to the US.
Kirk’s rhetoric, however, often stirred controversy. He was known for provocative remarks, particularly on issues of race, immigration, and religion. In April, he said, "Islam has conquest values. They seek to take over land and territory, and Europe is now a conquered continent."
In August, he accused Democratic congresswoman Jasmine Crockett of being part of an “attempt to eliminate the white population in this country,” adding, “The great replacement of white people is far more sinister than any redistricting project.”
The son of a mental health counsellor and an architect, Kirk’s rise began with a 2012 op-ed in the conservative outlet Breitbart, which led to a Fox News appearance and an invitation to speak at Benedictine University.
There, he met Montgomery, who encouraged him to build a campus-focused movement. Montgomery registered Turning Point USA on Kirk’s behalf later that year.
Charlie Kirk is survived by his wife, Erika—formerly Miss Arizona USA—and their two children. Further details regarding the investigation are expected to be released by the FBI upon the completion of their inquiry. - September 11, 2025
