REGIONAL mediators, alongside representatives from the United States and Iran, are engaged in discussions over a proposed 45-day ceasefire that could pave the way towards a permanent end to the conflict, according to a report by Axios citing multiple U.S., Israeli and regional sources familiar with the negotiations.

Reuters, on Monday, cited that the outline under consideration centres on a two-phase arrangement.

The initial phase would establish a temporary 45-day cessation of hostilities, during which negotiators would attempt to secure terms for a lasting settlement.

A second phase would then formalise an agreement to end the war altogether, the report said. Provisions are also being discussed to extend the ceasefire should further time be required to conclude negotiations.

Reuters said it could not independently verify the report.

Neither the White House nor the U.S. State Department immediately responded to requests for comment.

The diplomatic effort comes amid heightened tensions over maritime security. U.S. President Donald Trump told the The Wall Street Journal on Sunday that his deadline for Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz or face attacks on critical infrastructure is Tuesday evening. - April 6, 2026
