A UNITED STATES court on Wednesday released a handwritten note allegedly penned by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein weeks before his death in a New York jail cell, reviving longstanding controversy surrounding one of the most scrutinised deaths in recent American legal history.
The document, which had remained sealed for years as part of confidential court proceedings, was disclosed by Judge Kenneth Karas following a request by The New York Times.
However, the authenticity of the note has not been independently verified by the court.
AFP cited, written on lined paper, the note purportedly contains reflections by Epstein on the criminal investigation against him and his impending fate while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
“They investigated me for months — found nothing!!! It’s a ‘blessing’ to be able to choose your own time to say goodbye,” the note reportedly stated.
The message concluded with the words: “What do you want me to do — cry!! Not fun — NOT WORTH IT!!”
Epstein was found injured in his jail cell in July 2019 following what authorities described as a failed suicide attempt. Weeks later, in August 2019, he was discovered dead while being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan pending trial on charges linked to the trafficking and sexual abuse of underage girls.
His death was officially ruled a suicide by hanging, but the conclusion has remained the subject of intense public scepticism and numerous conspiracy theories, fuelled by reported security lapses inside the prison, malfunctioning or missing surveillance footage and claims that guards failed to follow standard monitoring procedures.
The release of the alleged note is expected to intensify renewed public and political scrutiny surrounding the Epstein case, which continues to reverberate through influential circles in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
Over the years, court filings and investigative documents linked to Epstein’s activities have implicated prominent political figures, business leaders and members of elite social networks, keeping the scandal at the forefront of international attention.
