A 5.8- magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao in the southern Philippines on Monday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

GFZ said the offshore earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres, classifying it as a shallow tremor capable of being felt across nearby coastal areas.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties and that no significant aftershocks were expected.

Authorities also indicated that the offshore earthquake was not expected to pose a tsunami threat.

The Philippines lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most seismically active regions, where earthquakes and volcanic activity occur frequently due to the movement of several major tectonic plates.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation, although no emergency response has been deemed necessary following the quake. - July 6, 2026
