A TEACHER was killed and four other people were injured in a shooting at a school in Thailand on Friday before the suspected gunman, an eighth-grade student, died by suicide, police said.
The incident occurred at about 10am local time at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bang Kruai district, Nonthaburi province, north-west of Bangkok.
Nonthaburi Provincial Police Commander Lieutenant-Colonel Dechrapee Kongdee confirmed that one teacher was killed and four others were injured, including another teacher and three students.
He said the suspected gunman later took his own life.
According to local media reports, the student barricaded himself on the third floor of the school building during the incident.
An 18-year-old student told Reuters he initially mistook the sound of gunfire for firecrackers or someone striking an object.
"I didn’t think it was a gun at first," Reuters reported him saying.
"There were many shots: bang bang bang. Then it went quiet. Then it started again."
Photographs circulated by emergency responders showed students evacuating the school grounds while ambulances and medical personnel attended to the injured.
One image showed a casualty on a stretcher outside an ambulance while another person received treatment from emergency medical personnel.
Authorities urged parents and members of the public to avoid the area to allow emergency services to carry out their operations.
According to district authorities, Debsirin Nonthaburi School had approximately 3,100 students and 147 teachers during the 2025 academic year.
The shooting follows another school attack in February, when a teacher was killed and a student injured after a gunman opened fire at a school in Hat Yai district in southern Thailand. - August 7, 2026
