MANILA – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, whose single six-year term will end next year, has accepted the endorsement by the ruling political party to run for vice-president in the 2022 elections, said Secretary Karlo Nograles today.

The governing PDP-Laban executive vice-president said Duterte “agrees to make the sacrifice and heed the clamour of the people” as he accepted the endorsement to run as vice-president in the 2022 elections, reported Xinhua.

Duterte accepted “after popular calls” from PDP-Laban members “aspiring for a transition of leadership that will guarantee continuity of the administration’s programmes during the past five years” of his administration, Nograles added.

He said the party will discuss the current president’s nomination during its national convention next month.

Duterte, 76, was elected president in the May 2016 polls. The constitution limits Philippine presidents to a single six-year term.

The vice-president is elected separately from the president under the Philippine law, and can be propelled to the presidency if the president dies or is incapacitated.

Neither Duterte nor his spokesman has yet to issue an official statement on the endorsement. – Bernama, August 24, 2021
