LONDON – Boris Johnson will resign as Conservative party leader today, the BBC reported, paving the way for a successor to replace him as British prime minister, after dozens of his ministers quit the government.
“Boris Johnson will resign as Conservative leader today – he will continue as prime minister until the autumn,” BBC political editor Chris Mason reported.
A no 10 source said Johnson had spoken to the chairman of the Conservative backbench 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady, and agreed to stand down, with a new Tory leader set to be in place by the party’s conference in October, SkyNews reported today.
AFP also reported a separate no 10 spokesman saying: “The prime minister will make a statement to the country today.” – AFP, July 7, 2022
