SARAWAK’S state-owned airline, AirBorneo, is expected to commence operations next month, leveraging existing Rural Air Service (RAS) routes across Sarawak, Sabah and Labuan.
Sarawak’s Transport Minister Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin, confirmed that the airline’s launch follows the pending acquisition of MASwings Sdn Bhd, anticipated to be completed by 31 December, under a Share Purchase Agreement signed on 12 February.
“Once the transition process is complete, AirBorneo is expected to commence its own operations in January 2026 using the existing Rural Air Service (RAS) in Sarawak, Sabah, and Labuan.
It is also planned to expand into regional jet operations by the end of the year, depending on aircraft availability, airport slot allocations, and regulatory approvals,” he said during his winding-up speech at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly today.
Speaking at a subsequent press conference, Lee added that the airline will initially operate with one Twin Otter and one ATR aircraft.
“The process of acquiring the aircraft will take time and is expected to be completed in phases over six months,” he noted.
The airline’s branding was unveiled on 21 August by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg, featuring a logo themed ‘Wings of Unity’ and the slogan ‘Borneo for You’, symbolising the state’s identity and vision to strengthen connectivity across the region. - December 2, 2025
