MALAYSIA’S rubber sector continues to be a cornerstone of the nation’s economy, generating over RM33 billion annually in exports of natural rubber and rubber-based products, bolstered by the research and development (R&D) capabilities spearheaded by the Malaysian Rubber Board (LGM).
Minister of Plantation and Commodities Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani emphasised that the country imports an average of RM7.5 billion worth of raw rubber each year, reflecting the capacity of domestic processing and downstream technologies.
“Our nation has approximately 1.1 million hectares of rubber plantations, but only about 60 per cent are actively cultivated. That leaves 40 per cent of plantations idle, representing significant potential for expansion,” Johari stated at the 100th Anniversary of Rubber Research celebration, held in the presence of LGM Chairman Tan Sri Ahmad Badri Mohd Zahir.
He noted that domestic rubber production currently stands at around 350,000 metric tonnes, a level still considered sustainable.
“Actual demand exceeds one million metric tonnes, making increased engagement by industry players a strategic necessity. Greater participation by investors will strengthen Malaysia’s position, particularly as a global leader in rubber R&D and technology,” he added.
Johari highlighted that the Malaysian Rubber Board has commercialised more than 200 R&D technologies and registered 394 patents, consolidating Malaysia’s reputation as a hub of rubber innovation.
At the same event, Ahmad Badri unveiled the LGM Strategic Book 2026–2030, designed to address global challenges, international compliance, and industry sustainability. The strategy prioritises advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, robotics, and automation, aligned with digital transformation and resource optimisation.
“This centenary celebration is not an end but the beginning of a new chapter focusing on innovation and the future of the industry,” Ahmad Badri remarked. He called on researchers, entrepreneurs, and the global community to collaborate and innovate continuously.
“Ensure Malaysian rubber remains relevant, competitive, and a vital commodity for generations to come,” he urged, reinforcing the country’s ambition to maintain its leading role in the global rubber market. - December 8, 2025
