Traders keep watch on inflation data as energy prices fuel fresh concerns
Energy costs remain a major factor behind inflation movements - August 3, 2026

INFLATION is back on investors’ radar as traders await upcoming consumer price index (CPI) data, which could provide fresh clues on the direction of interest rates and global markets.

A market analysis by JustMarkets released on July 27 highlighted how rising energy prices and renewed inflation pressures could influence trading sentiment in the months ahead.

Energy costs remain a major factor behind inflation movements, with higher prices for oil, natural gas and fuel affecting transportation, production and supply chain expenses.

These additional costs can eventually be passed on to consumers through higher prices for goods and services.

The firm said traders are paying close attention to CPI releases as the figures could shape expectations over how central banks respond to inflation.

A stronger-than-expected inflation reading may increase expectations of higher interest rates or tighter monetary policies, while a softer reading could fuel hopes of rate cuts.

Inflation data often triggers reactions across financial markets, including currencies, bonds, gold, equities and commodities.

In the foreign exchange market, major currency pairs such as EUR/USD, GBP/USD and USD/JPY are among those that could see increased movement depending on how inflation figures affect expectations surrounding the US Federal Reserve and other major central banks.

Gold prices are also closely watched as they tend to respond to changes in inflation expectations, interest rates and movements in the US dollar.

For stock markets, persistent inflation could raise concerns over higher borrowing costs and pressure company valuations, while easing inflation could improve investor sentiment.

The latest economic environment presents a challenge for policymakers, with inflation risks rising at a time when global growth remains uncertain.

Ahead of CPI releases, traders typically assess forecasts, previous economic data and their positions as inflation reports can lead to sharp market movements.

With inflation remaining a major factor in financial markets, upcoming CPI figures are expected to be closely monitored for signs of where interest rates, currencies and investor sentiment may be heading next. - August 3, 2026
