HOHHOT (China) – The number of China-Europe freight trains passing through Erenhot, the largest land port on the China-Mongolia border, reached a record high last year despite the Covid-19 pandemic, reported the Xinhua news agency.

A total of 2,379 trains passed through the port, an increase of 53.3% year-on-year, carrying 355,193 20-foot equivalent units of goods, up 32% on-year, according to the China Railway Hohhot Group.

Of the total, the port handled 1,232 inbound trains, an increase of 49% on-year, while 1,147 outbound trains were recorded, up 58.2%.

The imported and exported goods carried by the trains through Erenhot include timber, auto parts, textile products and glass objects.

Due to the suspension of international flights, and cargo ships being denied entry to many ports amid Covid-19, said analysts, trains on routes from China to Europe play a key role in stabilising the global supply chain. – Bernama, January 11, 2021
