KUALA LUMPUR – The government, through Sirim STS Sdn Bhd, has allocated a RM1.4 million grant to the Factory Transformation Programme (FTP) specifically for timber companies.
Deputy Plantation Industries and Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Wee Jeck Seng said the one-year programme that started last December involves 14 selected firms, most of which are engaged in the furniture sector.
FTP aims to assist the wood-based industry, especially companies that carry out factory evaluation, as well as diagnostic studies to identify inefficiency and wastage through the Sirim Green 5S application and techniques, and “Lean” management, he told a press conference here after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB), Sirim STS and Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) on the programme’s implementation.
“Sirim STS will finance 80% of the participation fees, with the balance to be funded by MTC.”
In his speech earlier, Wee said the MoU will empower the development of the timber industry through the utilisation of automation and innovative technologies related to Industry 4.0, and by providing incentives to encourage the use of automation and mechanisation.
“The organisation of the Lean and Green 5S management programme by MTIB from 2014 to 2019 benefited 171 companies, with savings of RM89.6 million recorded.
“MTIB will continue with these activities in 2021, and it will publish a reference book on ‘Lean’ applications in the timber industry.” – Bernama, April 9, 2021
