KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s manufacturing industry stands to benefit most from robotics, as its processes involve repetitive work in confined and structured spaces – an environment that robots excel in, said Universal Robots.
The Denmark-based collaborative robots, or “cobots”, technology market leader urged Malaysian manufacturers to implement robotics as a solution to the country’s skills and labour shortage, and to achieve higher productivity.
With an average payback period of as short as 12 months due to increased productivity, quality and consistency, manufacturers can expect a return on investment before year-end or in early 2022, it said in a statement.
“The manufacturing sector contributed 23.6% of Malaysia’s gross domestic product, second after the services sector (57.8%), in the fourth quarter of 2020.”
The firm said cobots can work around the clock without rest and produce consistent quality even under harsh conditions.
For every 10,000 employees, Malaysia has only 34 manufacturing robots. In comparison, Singapore and South Korea have 488 and 631 robots, respectively, per 10,000 workers. – Bernama, June 22, 2021
