SEOUL – Global tech titan Samsung Electronics Co has ranked first in the number of patents filed in South Korea over the last five years, reported the Yonhap news agency.

The company registered 19,588 patents with local authorities between 2016 and June 10 this year, the most among local firms, according to data from corporate tracker CEO Score.

The figure accounts for 13.8% of the 141,752 patents filed by 345 companies out of the country’s top 500 firms by sales in the cited period. 

Samsung’s domestic rival LG Electronics Co came next with 16,236 patents, followed by affiliate leading chemicals firm LG Chem Ltd with 10,985, top automaker Hyundai Motor Co (8,246) and display behemoth LG Display Co (8,000).

The number of patents registered by the top five firms makes up 44.5% of the total.

By conglomerate, LG Group registered the most patents at 43,088, followed by Samsung (35,034) and Hyundai (15,160).

By industry, patents related to the IT, and electrical and electronics sectors totalled 65,589 in the cited period, accounting for 46.3% of the overall figure. – Bernama, June 30, 2021
