KUALA LUMPUR – Chevrolet today announced the launch of a recall campaign involving 3,725 units of Chevrolet and SAAB vehicles in Malaysia to replace the Takata driver airbag inflators.

The automotive firm said the affected models are Chevrolet Cruze (model year 2010 to 2015), Chevrolet Orlando (2013 to 2015), Chevrolet Sonic (2013 to 2014), Chevrolet TRAX (2017) and SAAB 9-3 (2007).

“These driver airbag inflators contain non-desiccated PSAN (phase-stabilised ammonium nitrate) propellant tablets, which may experience alteration after exposure to high temperature and daylight temperature cycles in a high humidity environment.

“The inflator may rupture if gas generation exceeds the ability of the inflator to vent the gas,” it said in a statement.

Since Chevrolet does not currently have an office in Malaysia, the company has appointed two local partners to carry out the campaign.

It said the recall repairs, starting today and free of charge, will be handled by selected Honda authorised dealerships.

Meanwhile, Saphan9 Engagement, a communications and content consultancy, has been appointed to handle announcements, customer outreach, digital assets, information and data management.

Affected owners are encouraged to visit the Chevrolet recall microsite where they will be guided on the steps for the airbag recall repair. For enquiries, vehicle owners can also call 011-3129-9963 or 011-3129-9965. – Bernama, June 1, 2022
