KUALA LUMPUR – The volume index of wholesale and retail trade registered a growth of 25.9% to 144.5 points in the third quarter (Q3) of 2022 compared with the same quarter in the previous year, said the Statistics Department (DOSM).

In a statement, the department said that positive growth was recorded in all sub-sectors, namely motor vehicles (142.4%), retail trade (29.6%), and wholesale trade (7.1%). 

“On a quarter-on-quarter (q-o-q) comparison, the volume index also increased by 1.6% in Q3 2022.

“For seasonally-adjusted volume index, the wholesale and retail trade decreased 2.1% as against the second quarter of 2022,” it said. 

Meanwhile, for performance across sub-sectors, the volume index of wholesale trade growth of 7.1% in Q3 2022 was attributed to wholesale of household goods with 24.3%, followed by wholesale on a fee or contract basis of 15.4%. 

For quarterly comparison, the volume index of wholesale trade went up 0.5%.

The positive growth of 29.6% in retail trade was contributed by retail sales of automotive fuel in specialised stores (51.7%), retail sales of other goods in specialised stores (43.6%), and retail sales of non-specialised stores (32.3%). 

For q-o-q comparison, the volume index of this sub-sector posted an increment of 2.9%. 

The increase of 142.4% year-on-year (y-o-y) in the volume index of motor vehicles was supported by sales, maintenance and repair of motorcycles and sales of motor vehicle parts and accessories which grew 212.9% and 166.2%, respectively. 

The performance of this sub-sector increased by 0.9% against the previous quarter.

Separately, DOSM said Malaysia’s sales value of wholesale and retail trade hit RM134.0 billion in September 2022, up 23.9% y-o-y.

“The increase was attributed to the retail trade sub-sector which rose RM13.3 billion or 30.0% to record RM57.7 billion. 

“Wholesale trade expanded 13.3% or RM7.1 billion to RM60.0 billion while motor vehicles surged 51.0% or RM5.5 billion to RM16.3 billion,” it said. 

For a month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, sales value increased by 0.3%, contributed by the motor vehicles sub-sector which rose 1.2%. 

For the performance across sub-sectors, the retail trade sub-sector growth of 30.0% in September 2022 was supported by retail sales in non-specialised stores which grew 31.9% or RM5.2 billion to RM21.3 billion. 

Likewise, other groups in this sub-sector also recorded positive growth, namely retail sales in specialised stores (43.4%), retail sales of automotive fuel (44.4%), and retail sales of household goods (23.1%). 

The 13.3% growth in the wholesale trade sub-sector in September 2022 was lifted by other specialised wholesale which rose 13.9% or RM2.8 billion to RM23.2 billion. 

This was followed by the wholesale of household goods, wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals, and wholesale of machinery, equipment and supplies with 21.9%, 16.0%, and 11.1%, respectively. 

The increase of 51.0% in the motor vehicles sub-sector was mainly attributed to sales of motor vehicles which grew 40.2%. 

Other groups that contributed to this growth were sales of motor vehicle parts and accessories (65.8%), maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (80.2%), and sales, maintenance and repair of motorcycles (53.3%). 

In terms of volume index, the wholesale and retail trade registered a y-o-y growth of 18.4%, contributed by motor vehicles and retail trade which increased 43.9% and 27.1%, respectively. 

Similarly, the wholesale trade also recorded a positive growth of 3.5%. The seasonally-adjusted volume index declined 2.0% m-o-m. – Bernama, November 9, 2022
