IN the last nights of Ramadan leading up to Hari Raya, the royal town of Kuala Kangsar in Perak will be lit up with the flickering, dancing lights of the pelita (traditional Malay kerosene lamps).
It is an annual tradition that the residents of this sleepy little town take seriously – neighbours would compete with one another to see who can come up with the most beautiful and elaborate decorations on their premises using these lighted torches.
Although the Royal Ubudiah Mosque in Bukit Chandan does not compete with the townsfolk, tradition dictates that it should not be left behind in this beautiful festive tradition to celebrate Islam’s most sacred month and its Hari Raya Aidilfitri holiday.
This photograph was captured between the quivering flames of the pelita torches while focussing upon the mosque’s famed golden brass dome as it is lit from below.
The structure stands out further, as its bright colours coupled with the dancing fire in the foreground creates a strong contrast against the dark of night in the background. – The Vibes, May 1, 2022
