BLACK Adam easily took the top spot in last weekend’s global box office with a take of US$140 million (RM706 million), despite mixed reviews from critics. There is a lot to be said about ending on a high note, and for many starved DC movie fans nothing could top the hype (spoilers???) of Henry Cavill returning as Supes in the post-credits scene.
Looking spiffy (and very muscly) in the iconic blue and red costume, Cavill walks out of a cloud of dust and challenges The Rock’s Black Adam to a superhero brawl in Black Adam 2 (or whatever it will end up being titled).
Cavill waited for the weekend to come to a close before taking to social media, posting a video on his official Instagram account.
“I wanted to wait the weekend before posting this,” Cavill says in the video he posted to social, “because I wanted to give you a chance to watch Black Adam.”
The actor, who is also currently the star of Netflix’s fantasy series The Witcher, teamed with Instagram and dozens of creators to announce the news. It is the first time Instagram has teamed with an actor on an announcement.
In terms of solid plans, Cavill is in final talks to return as Superman, though a Man of Steel 2 is not on the horizon, as there is no director or writer attached to such a project.
Cavill first played the role of Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel, directed by Zack Snyder. He then reprised the roles in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, also directed by Snyder. There’s also the Snyder director’s cut that became available to stream on HBO. All three movies made US$2.2 billion in total worldwide.
Unfortunately, the reception to those movies were decidedly mixed, and what was intended to be a franchise to rival the enormous success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was dead on arrival, despite the successes of 2017’s Wonder Woman and 2018’s Aquaman.
That being said, The Batman was released earlier this year to positive reviews and good box office so it was inevitable that DC Comics’ other iconic superhero would make a comeback. A few projects featuring Superman, but without Cavill in the role, were in development – including one featuring a black Superman.
If Cavill is truly back as Superman for the long haul, then where does the rest of the universe stand? It’s known that Ben Affleck will be back as Bruce Wayne/Batman in cameos in both The Flash and Aquaman, both slated for some time next year.
Above all this, with the recent shakeups at Warner Bros Discovery, which resulted in the cancellation of Batgirl – among other moves – the studio needs to regain the trust of fans. Bringing back Cavill and Affleck on top of the success of Black Adam is a step in the right direction. – The Vibes, October 25, 2022
