KUALA LUMPUR – SMK Kalabakan, one of two secondary schools in the Sabahan constituency, is facing multiple issues, including its building posing a danger to occupants, exacerbated by the fact that the land is not owned by the Education Ministry (MoE).
In a parliamentary reply to Ma’Mun Sulaiman (Kalabakan-Warisan) yesterday, the ministry said that they plan on replacing the building for the school.
Unfortunately, the plan has come to a halt as MoE does not have ownership of the land where the school is situated.
Therefore, the ministry will have to first procure the site before they can proceed with submitting an application for approval of a replacement building.
The premises were declared unsafe, ranked six on a danger scale of seven by the authorities.
Buildings that fall within the range of one to four are considered safe and functional. They are categorised as rank five when school officials lodge reports that the state of the building is unsafe.
The sixth rank is used to categorise buildings deemed unsafe by the district or state’s Education Department’s technicians.
Finally, the seventh rank is used when the Public Works Department acknowledges the dangerous condition of the building.
MoE said it is currently awaiting results from the Sabah Public Works Department on the state of the building. – The Vibes, November 16, 2021
