JOHOR BARU – Education Minister Datuk Radzi Jidin is urging the Election Commission (EC) to refrain from using secondary schools as polling centres for the upcoming Johor state election, seeing that the contest is held in the midst of the SPM examinations.

Radzi, who says he will formally write to the EC over the matter, warns that doing so could interrupt the exams.

Receiving complaints from teachers, it was pointed out that the use of schools as polling centres would require further rearranging of classrooms once the polls are over.

“We have not received any application from the EC on the use of schools as polling centres, but we have decided that we do not want secondary schools to be used.

“We have no problem if they want to use primary schools,” Radzi was quoted as saying by New Straits Times.

Meanwhile, Radzi also explained that the 2021 SPM examinations will continue according to the set schedule, adding that he is confident the process would run smoothly, given that almost 90% of candidates are immunised.

The Johor elections are slated for March 12, while the SPM examinations are set to begin March 3 to 29. – The Vibes, February 12, 2022
