KUALA LUMPUR – The SJK (C) Mun Choong parent-teacher association (PTA) has raised about RM800,000 for the relatives of the victims of the fatal Batang Kali landslide tragedy, said Deputy Education Minister Lim Hui Ying.
In a Facebook post today, Lim congratulated the school for its efforts, while expressing her gratitude to PTA head U Chin Ong for providing immediate aid to the teachers, parents, and students affected by the December 16 incident.
“I would also like to thank the school’s new principal, Cheong Kam Yin, who has been systematically managing the school’s operations since her transfer here.
“I believe that under Cheong’s guidance, along with that of the teaching staff, the school’s management board, PTA, and the local community, the school will be able to survive this situation,” she said in the post, in which she also shared photos of her visit to the school.
Noting that the ministry has placed 25 counsellors in the school to provide psychosocial support to its students, teachers, and staff, Lim added that six new teachers have also been transferred to the school to fill teaching vacancies.
The school lost six teachers, a canteen operator and his two children, and a canteen worker. They were among the total of 31 people who were killed in the landslide.
Of the 31 who died, 13 were children between the ages of 1 and 12.
Entire families – parents and children – also lost their lives in the pre-dawn landslide that left 61 survivors out of a total of 92 people. – The Vibes, January 3, 2022
