KUALA LUMPUR – What started as a group of residents playing carom in Section 7, Shah Alam, has turned into one running a community garden.

With time on their hands due to the various Covid-19 travel restrictions, residents from Block 40 here went all out to build a gazebo and recreational areas with second-hand items, such as pallets, bed frames, old pipes and tyres as well as whatever construction materials they could get their hands on.

Now, the community garden has plots for vegetables, herbs and fruit trees, in the hopes that the crops will benefit all residents in time to come.

Block 40 Community Garden programme coordinator Mohamad Azmi Mohamad Sidek, 46, said, they are also participating in the Shah Alam City Council’s (MBSA) Mini Zee Bee Competition for the first time this year.

Since 2013, the competition has been one of the MBSA’s community initiatives in spurring the Clean Zone Programme, emphasising cleanliness, beauty and environmental sustainability.

In conjunction with this year’s 64th National Day celebration, the Block 40 residents teamed up to decorate the community garden area with more than 200 Jalur Gemilang of various sizes to show their love for the country.

While still adhering to SOPs, some of the children also chipped in to help to put up mini flags.

Although there will be no large-scale celebrations as in previous year, Azmi encouraged Malaysians to continue flying the Jalur Gemilang with pride and respect.
