PERLIS – the smallest state in the nation, renowned for its mangoes, sugarcane and kenaf, is making new strides to tap the growing potential in eco-tourism.

Its Menteri Besar, Abu Bakar Hamzah, recently met with Tourism Malaysia Board deputy chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin for a briefing on its potential in promoting and marketing quality tourism.

Yeoh, who is also the Penang Port Commission (PPC) chairperson, in turn expressed optimism that both state - federal ties can boost tourism in Perlis.

He described the 60-minute courtesy call with Abu Bakar as impactful.

"Besides exchanging ideas on the potential of new tourism products, the visit strengthens ties between the federal and state. We also discussed producing sustainable tourism, which can be competitive regionally," said Yeoh.

Yeoh said that the visit was also timely with the "Visit Malaysia Year 2026" campaign in full swing now.

The state has long received attention from the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, who sees the state's pristine landscape as strong potential for eco-tourism.

Perlis is also among the small network of UNESCO and national geopark attractions due to its caves and hilly terrain. - February 27, 2026.
