THE world premiere of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 was followed by the highest number of European customer enquiries of any new car launch for this South Korean automotive brand. Hyundai marketers recently confirmed that from its February 23 unveiling till last week, it had received a huge 236,000-plus ‘expressions of interest’ from potential buyers from around Europe. This unbelievable number is almost three times the expected interest that Hyundai Motor marketers had predicted within 24 hours of reservations opening.
The popularity of this new electric vehicle continued in its home country, South Korea, where first-day pre-orders for the Ioniq 5 saw the company receiving a record number of 23,760 pre-orders, which is way better than any other Hyundai sales demand to date. It even outpaced the previous record of 17,294 pre-orders for the face-lifted Hyundai Grandeur sedan which was launched in late 2019.
This all-electric Hyundai family vehicle is expected to be priced between 50 million won to 55 million won (US$45,000-USD49,500) which is about RM182,500 to about RM200,800 before local taxes and delivery.
The Ioniq 5 is the first model built on Hyundai Motor Group’s new dedicated architecture for battery electric vehicles, called Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). It is also the first model in the new Ioniq product line-up brand, redefining the electric mobility lifestyle with sustainable and innovative features, from the eco-friendly materials of its interior design to ultra-fast charging and Vehicle-to-Load function.

This Ioniq 5 will be produced and delivered to customers in Europe before the rest of the world where emission laws, charging infrastructure and EV rebates are high as many European countries ‘push’ hard for low emissions and clean air.
The exceptionally high interest in Ioniq 5 underlines the strength of Hyundai in zero-emission mobility. With its ultra-fast charging, long-range and customisable interior space, the Ioniq 5 is a game-changer that sets the benchmark in its class and these outstanding characteristics have immediately proved to be attractive to significant numbers of European customers.
Furnished with primarily eco-friendly materials and textiles, the interior design reflects consumers’ rising interest in personal transportation that supports well-being as well as demand for more ethical and sustainable products.
Ioniq 5’s driver and passengers can freely enter and exit the cabin on either side when parked in a narrow spot because the flat floor allows the centre console to slide back and forth. This resulted in a fundamental rethink of the conventional centre console and to offer greater function than a static storage box. The newly developed ‘Universal Island’ replaces the centre console and becomes the centrepiece of the Ioniq 5’s living space experience.

Ioniq 5 is equipped with electronically adjustable front seats. The seats recline to the optimum angle, offering a weightless feeling for the occupant. Hyundai reduced the thickness of these front seats by about 30%, providing more space for those seated in the second row. This allows passengers to customise the interior space according to different needs and situations.
The 800-volt battery is capable of going from a 10 to 80% charge in just 18 minutes. With less than five minutes of charging, customers can enjoy 100km of range. The Ioniq 5 will be available in Europe starting in the first half of 2021. – The Vibes, March 9, 2021
