PENANG has set its sights on a 100% cashless transaction rate after recording 99.40 per cent under the national Cashless Boleh 5.0 campaign.

This, after it was also crowned the Champion of the Outstanding Digital Payment Usage Performance Award for the campaign at the national level.

Local Government and Town & Country Planning Exco, Jason H'ng Mooi Lye, said the recognition proves the state government's continued commitment to strengthening the digitalisation agenda and inculcating the use of cashless payments in the delivery of public services.

It marked Penang’s second consecutive win following a 95% rate in the previous edition.

"One of the key initiatives involves the participation of all 24 state government departments and agencies in a campaign intended to promote digital payments to expand the adoption of cashless transactions among the public.

“This achievement enables Penang to surpass other states such as Kedah, Selangor and Melaka, thus taking home the winning prize worth RM50,000 along with a trophy and championship certificate,” he said.

He said the state government is collecting user feedback to assess existing services and identify areas for improvement.

All 24 Penang State Government departments now provide cashless payment services except on Fridays.

“With the commitment and cooperation of all parties, I am confident that Penang will continue to maintain its position as the leading state in the digitalisation agenda and serve as a benchmark for other states in Malaysia,” added H’ng.

He said efforts to expand the use of cashless payments were also strengthened through various announcements and promotions.

These include the installation of promotional materials in government offices as well as the use of the department's website, social media and digital platforms to increase public awareness of the convenience, security and benefits of digital payments. – July 22, 2026
