ONLINE digital cartoon showcase, the Asean Human Rights Cartoon Exhibition takes place today at 2pm, with Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim joining to launch the event.
Together in the kickoff, is the daughter of former Indonesian president Gus Dur, Yenny Wahid, and Human Rights Watch Asia deputy director Phil Robertson.
Running until May 30, the event organised by Malaysian political cartoonist Zunar and NGO Hujjah Ehsan, in conjunction with The Vibes, will be hosted on www.craftora.com. Entrance is free.
Themed ‘Human Rights in My Country’, the gallery features 100 hard-hitting cartoons from 37 cartoonists across the Asean region.
There are 13 from Malaysia (including Zunar), 13 from Indonesia, 4 from Thailand, 6 from the Philippines and one cartoonist representing Myanmar.
Audiences can expect the following issues to be highlighted: the state of emergency in Malaysia, the royal defamation law in Thailand, the murderous war on drugs in the Philippines, the coup in Myanmar and Papua conflict in Indonesia.
Apart from the main gallery, the cartoonists joined hands in creating a separate gallery, which will run concurrently called the Myanmar Solidarity Gallery.
“It is an effort to show support to the people in the military-ruled country,” said Zunar.
“Cartoonists put to pen drawings that mark a symbol of solidarity as we stand with the people of Myanmar to defend democracy against the coup d’état by the military regime,” he added.
In addition, the Asean Human Rights Cartoon Exhibition will also host special forums each week with designated speakers attending the individual sessions.
Among them include Prof Dr Muliyadi Mahamood, Nalini Eumalai, Agus Widodo, Tanis Weraweksong, Josua Cabrera, Sarah Wahid, Sarah Joan Mokhtar, Faizati, Shazeera Zawawi, Grace Tjondro, and many more.
