POLITICAL cartoonist Zunar has hit out at PAS supporters after a cartoon he drew on the Tabung Haji Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) was allegedly taken, altered and reposted without his permission.

Zunar, whose real name is Zulkiflee Anwar Ulhaque, said the cartoon was first published last week before a Facebook account named “PAS PN Seluruh Malaysia” allegedly picked it up, made changes to it and uploaded the edited version.

The cartoonist questioned the conduct of those behind the post, saying it was ironic for people who often speak about Islam and morality in politics to use someone else’s work without permission.

“I am puzzled. Are PAS members only good at shouting about Islam while their conduct is poor?” he said in a Facebook post.

Zunar also took a swipe at the party’s tarbiah, asking whether its teachings allowed members to take another person’s work without consent.

He said this was not the first time his cartoons had allegedly been used and altered by people linked to PAS.

In an earlier case, Zunar said PAS Melaka leader Azmi Haji Ali had also taken one of his cartoons, modified it and uploaded it to Facebook.

The matter was reported to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), he said.

The case is now before the courts, with the next hearing scheduled for October 23.

Zunar, 64, has long been known for his political cartoons, many of which have focused on Malaysian politics and public affairs.

He received the International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists in New York in 2015, becoming the first full-time cartoonist to receive the honour.

In 2016, he was also among the recipients of the Cartooning for Peace International Cartoonist Award in Geneva, alongside Kenyan cartoonist Gado.

The award was presented at a ceremony attended by former United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan. – August 24, 2026
