SIBU – A Malaysian gynaecologist has created what he says is the world's first unisex condom, reported Reuters.
Called the Wondaleaf Unisex Condom, its inventor hopes it will empower anyone to take better control of their sexual health.
John Tang Ing Chinh, a gynaecologist at medical supplies firm Twin Catalyst said: "It's basically a regular condom with an adhesive covering."
Made from a medical-grade material usually used as a dressing for injuries and wounds, it can be worn by females or males.
On its website, the condom is described as "a thin, unique unisex stick-on condom that allows barrier protection for the lower abdomen.
"[Its] default configuration is an internal condom, but the centrally located non-adhesive pouch can be inverted to become an external condom."
Priced at RM14.99, each box of Wondaleaf contains two condoms, as well as two water-based lubricant sachets and retention gauze.
The condoms are made from polyurethane, a material used in transparent wound dressings.
Because it is thin yet strong and waterproof – "Once you put it on, you often don't realise that it's there," said Tang.
He added the Wondaleaf had gone through several rounds of clinical research and testing. Checks by The Vibes found that the condom is available for order at Wondaleaf.com.
"Based on the number of clinical trials we have conducted, I am quite optimistic that given time it will be a meaningful addition to the many contraceptive methods used in the prevention of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases," Tang said. – The Vibes, October 28, 2021
