USED for centuries to treat anxiety and overcome fear, hypnosis is a technique that highly trained practitioners use to assist individuals to tap into their subconscious through a guided state of relaxation.

Curious about the method, we tested the approach on some of our staff in the hopes of tackling the things that bother them the most.

“It is basically a method of communicating with the subconscious mind where it is brought to a heightened awareness,” shared certified hypnotherapist Jespal Singh Sidhu, prior to the start of our individual hypnotherapy sessions.

He attended the experience together with his therapist peers, Phemilla Mair Krishnan, and Sharifah Fadzlin Yahaya.

“Therapists will usually plant positive reaffirmations into the subconscious, which usually manifests itself during your conscious state.

“Now this is seen as an important approach because our subconscious controls at least 80% of our (body) activity. If something is bothering you and the issue is deeply rooted, it will play up,” he said.

“If you can address the subconscious mind, you will effectively address the conscious state as well,” added the therapist.

“The general public usually misunderstands the concept of hypnotherapy,” noted Sharifah.

“In fact, hypnosis is a situation where we reprogram your subconscious in a trance-like state to deal with anxiety one may have, where we will try to bring you back to the situation that may have triggered it.

“As a result, the memory may still remain, but the emotions attached to it will be different – something that will not cause deeper anxiety or stress,” she shared.

Jespal notes what needed to be clarified about the session conducted for the purpose of today’s discussion is that no one will lose themselves.

“When you are in a hypnotic state, you are still very much aware of your surroundings,” he said.

“For example, if you close your eyes, you can still hear the sounds around you. So, if I clap, knock or say something, you can still hear it. However, you are in a relaxed state that the noise does not bother and you only focus on what the therapist is telling you."
