A PENANG state executive councillor has called for increased efforts to identify and treat those suffering from mental health conditions and depression.

Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said mental health and depression are complex matters and could be triggered by numerous causes.

“Such problems are not just confined to those prone to online content such as cyberbullying but also to other conditions from family, friends, jobs and emotional distress.

“Treating persons suffering from such conditions requires close cooperation from society, including family, friends and also teachers,” he said.

He noted that mental health problems and depression reportedly increased during the Covid-19 lockdown period and may still be prevalent till today.

“Many also fall into depression after losing huge sums of money to scams.

“However, with close cooperation from all walks of society, such cases can be identified early and treated.

“What is important is for us to stay vigilant and identify early warning signs among our friends and family before it is too late,” he added. – October 13, 2026
