HERE is a new drop-top sensation representing the best in Lexus design, engineering and craftsmanship. First came the Lexus LC Coupe in 2017 and with its global success, engineers at Lexus realised that they needed to include a soft-top model of equal status to the lineup, and so this Lexus LC 500 Convertible was born.

Driving feel

Under the shapely hood is a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 engine working with a 10-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission which has the same specifications as with the LC 500 Coupe and it allows this convertible to accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds and reach a top speed (electronically limited) of 270 km/h.

This luxury convertible uses the Lexus Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) which has been optimised to complement the convertible, providing an impressive 650 different levels of damping force. All this rides on sexy looking 21-inch forged wheels with two-tone polished finish and black coating that affords the model with a muscular stance.

Cabin features

Lexus has provided a premium 13- speaker Mark Levinson Reference Surround Sound System. In true Lexus Omotenashi spirit, this system automatically adjusts the acoustic design based on the ambient sounds. So whether the roof is open or shut, the perfect environment for a rich audio experience is always achieved.

Lexus engineers also designed the cabin to reduce wind noise via the unique shape of the beltline and rear molding which suppresses wind from entering. A transparent wind deflector located behind the rear seats also helps reduce buffeting, keeping the cabin serene up to speeds of 60km/h.

There is also an impressive 10.3-inch high-resolution split-screen multimedia display, which provides immediate access to audio or climate controls and various systems, including the voice-activated navigation system.

The roof line

The line of the roof was key to the designers achieving their goal, as Chief Designer Tadao Mori explained: “Although there are many convertible models out there, few of them are stylish and elegant both when the roof is open and closed. Particularly when the roof is raised, ridge lines in the uneven surface tend to give an unrefined impression. That is why for the LC Convertible, we put maximum effort into realising the same beautiful roof line as the coupe.”

Perfecting the silhouette

The designers took advantage of the LC’s platform specifications and the soft top’s folding mechanism to set the tonneau cover as low as possible. They also avoided the familiar flat platform look seen on many other convertibles by adding fairing-shaped accents that echo the curves of the rear headrests. The hydraulic-operated soft-top features an innovative folding mechanism that allows it to open in quick 15 seconds and close in an equally quick 16 seconds.

The soft top is constructed from a 4-layered material (3 layers of fabric + NVH material) which can be opened or closed at speeds up to 50kmh for added convenience. A tonneau cover is also incorporated to cover the roof storage space in order to give the LC 500 Convertible a neat appearance when the roof is opened.

Asking price

This sexy Lexus is priced at RM1,350,000.00 after sales and service tax without insurance in Malaysia. Owners will be able to enjoy a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty plus free service throughout that duration or for its first 100,000km as long as it is cared for accordingly by trained Lexus professionals at authorised Lexus Centres. – The Vibes, November 19, 2020
