[VIDEO] Youth career aspirations vs reality

WORK culture and expectations have certainly changed over the years, where now opportunities can be found in abundance.

However, the pressing question remains whether these opportunities provide enough motivation and job satisfaction for the Malaysian workforce as well as prospective graduates anticipating their professional journey.

In 2021, the Asian Journal of Research in Business and Management (AJRBM) report published by Asian Scholars Network (ASNet) highlighted that job satisfaction has always been linked with the performance of an organisation, as the higher satisfaction of employees leads to a better reputation for the firm and a lower turnover rate.

The study also specified that living area, education qualification/skills and compensation are significant and considered important factors to meet their job satisfaction compared to gender and work environment.

In a separate and more recent report by PwC on Workforce Hopes and Fears Survey 2022 (Malaysia) it states that personal fulfillment and financial reward have the biggest influence on retention.

While 59% of the study samples are satisfied with exercising existing roles, job fulfillment (66%) and remuneration (69%) are very important or extremely important when they consider making a change in their work environment.

Interestingly, the report was also able to identify that 17% of the respondents are likely to change jobs in the next 12 months.

In general, we know it is hard to single out the reason behind the realities of job-hopping as there are many variables.

So, there is a need to look at the considerations of what influences career expectations and confidence among youths today.
