IT is the start of December 2020 and with the Covid-19 pandemic continuing its trail of havoc in many sectors of the Malaysian and global economy, the last thing on some people’s minds is the idea of getting a new car in their garage.
Well, it looks like Malaysians are still a car crazy population and the need for a new car continues for a large number of Malaysians.
The Players
Until Chinese automotive giant Geely came along and took over Proton and launched the Proton X70 SUV and more recently the stylish and well equipped Proton X50 crossover, Perodua has been having the ‘lions’ share of the Malaysian car sales market for many years as Proton struggled with lackluster vehicles and borrowed technology.
Now, comes a revival of fortune for Proton and with all older Proton models, Saga, Iriz, Persona and Exora re-engineered by Geely, sales are back up and Perodua is feeling the sales pinch.
Perodua Sales
At 12.40pm Wednesday, December 2, Perodua sent out a release sharing impressive sales of 23,119 cars in November 2020, including a very impressive 5,027 units on November 30, the most it has ever registered in a single day.
The sales were made up of 6,295 Myvis, 6,318 Axias, 6,224 Bezzas, 2,617 Aruz and 1,665 Alzas getting new owners in November and Perodua has already sold over 195,000 cars so far this year.
Based on its sales momentum, the carmaker is on track to meet its 210,000 units' year end registration target.

Proton Sales
Then at 6.15pm the same day, Proton shared its November sales figure of 11,411 units (which includes both domestic and export) sold in November, a growth rate of 18% over the same month in 2019, contributing to a total sales figure of 96,410 units in 2020.
It is clear that even though Proton sales for the month were slightly down compared to October, deliveries of the all-new Proton X50 began to gather momentum.
A total of 1,756 units were delivered, making it the best-selling B-segment crossover in Malaysia and when combined with 2,157 units of the Proton X70, it makes Proton the sales leader for high riding vehicles overall.
Meanwhile, the overall sales numbers came from the Saga 4,279, Persona 1,942, Exora 629 and the Iriz 637 units.
The Game
As Perodua continues to lead in the sales numbers, Proton is not really worried as Geely has plans to launch replacement models for the Saga, Persona, Exora and Iriz in the coming year and this will move their numbers up. – The Vibes, December 3, 2020
