POLICE have arrested at least 23 individuals, including teenagers, after they were suspected of being involved in a fight and damaging a vehicle following the Super League football match between Perak FC and Selangor FC at the Petaling Jaya City Council stadium.
Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the individuals aged 16 to 44 were arrested by a team of officers and members of the Petaling Jaya District Police Headquarters at around 5pm yesterday.
“The police team keeping peace at the football match in MBPJ detained two buses believed to be carrying supporters of the Perak football team.
“As a result of further investigation, the police arrested 23 people suspected of being involved in the beating up of five Selangor team supporters that happened a few minutes before.
“One of the victims suffered a broken arm,” he said in a statement today.
Hussein added that the investigation found that the group was also suspected of damaging four vehicles parked near the stadium.
He said all the suspects have been remanded for four days from today until November 29 for investigation according to Section 147 of the Penal Code, which deals with rioting, as well as Section 427, which deals with mischief and causing damage.
They are also being investigated under Section 15 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for alleged self-administration.
Yesterday, a 44-second photo and video went viral on social media showing a group of individuals in a violent brawl at the parking lot of the MBPJ Stadium just before a match between Selangor FC and Perak FC.
The footage also shows a vehicle being damaged as a result of the fight.
Selangor eventually won the match by thrashing Perak 4-0.
The Malaysian Football League (MFL) said they were aware of the arrests but were waiting for the full update from the police.
“We also look to investigate this further as well,” MFL chief executive officer Datuk Stuart Ramalingam was quoted as saying by New Straits Times.
“We will take this matter up with all clubs and take stronger and collective action. We must collectively create a safer environment for the masses who attend matches.” – The Vibes, November 26, 2023.
