SARAWAK Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg has given an assurance to the prime minister that his ruling state coalition will not entertain any move to replace the current federal government.

In asserting this, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Abang Johari also reiterated his firm stance to see the Unity Government in Putrajaya remain in place until the next general election, which is due in four years.

He said that Abang Johari, who is chairman of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), will ensure that the coalition neither participates nor supports any such effort.

Anwar added that the premier revealed that there have been efforts by certain parties to elicit support to overthrow the government, but these were rejected by him.

“GPS has been consistently firm on this matter for a year now,” Anwar said during a dialogue with editors at Seri Perdana in Putrajaya today.

“We spoke for a long time yesterday and he wants to close this episode altogether.”

Anwar stressed that any attempt to change the government would not be possible without support from Sabah and Sarawak

Abang Johari had called on Anwar yesterday. The two leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation between the state and federal governments.

The prime minister had earlier said in a post on Facebook that they touched on matters related to cooperation between Sarawak and the federal government on green energy as well as on new investment opportunities, both in Sarawak and the peninsula.

“We also spoke about close cooperation in the context of the Unity Government which will definitely continue to be strengthened for the sake of the people,” he said.

There have been claims circulating on social media that the present government would collapse and that an official announcement on this would be made soon.

The Unity Government is now supported by 151 MPs in the 222-seat Dewan Rakyat, giving it a comfortable two-thirds majority in Parliament. – The Vibes, December 23, 2023
