PERLIS PAS assemblywoman Wan Badariah Wan Saad died at Hospital Tuanku Fauziah in Kangar yesterday, adding to the political uncertainty facing the state's 15-member opposition and government landscape.

Perlis PAS confirmed in a social media post that Wan Badariah, 50, died at 4.26pm on Saturday.

A former state executive councillor, she was elected Mata Ayer assemblywoman in the 2022 state election and was also a prominent figure in the state's PAS Muslimat wing.

Wan Badariah, a shariah lawyer, had suffered serious health complications in May 2024 and was placed in an induced coma after developing heart and lung problems. She spent about a month in intensive care before recovering sufficiently to be discharged and resume her duties.

Her death leaves PAS and Bersatu with five assemblymen each in the 15-seat state assembly, with four seats vacant now.

The development comes amid continuing political tensions in Perlis, where Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah remains in office despite being suspended from Bersatu for two party election terms over alleged breaches of party rules. The suspension also stripped him of his party positions. - November 1, 2026
