THERE may be only eight students in total at the school, but classes go on as usual.

This is the situation at SK Tebing Rebak in Sg Sumun, Bagan Datuk, which had two new students for Standard One yesterday.

The students – Ashman Hazeeq Mohamed Redzwan and Mohamad Haziq Haikal Mohamad Hilmi, both aged seven – are from Kg Tebing Rebak.

According to reports in Sinar Harian, Zaiton Hashim, who is the headmistress, said there were now two students in Standards One and Three; while there was one student each in Standards Two, Four, Five and Six.

However, she said the enrolment for the new school session, which began yesterday, was nothing new.

“This is the situation every year. Last year, we had a total of eight students, and it is the same this time around after two students left upon completing Standard Six,” she said.

She said one reason for the low number of students was because many of those in the younger generation have since moved to other towns in search of better jobs.

“There are just four members in our Parent-Teacher Association,” said Zaiton, adding that the school was built in 1954 and was about 20km from Bagan Datuk town.

There are now six teachers and five support staff in the school.

However, she said there was no lack of facilities in the school and each student was given a laptop while the school toilets were also upgraded at a cost of RM70,000.

“Classes go on as usual, following the set timetables by the Education Ministry.

“As teachers, we continue with our responsibilities and ensure we give our students the best,” she added. – The Vibes, March 12, 2024
