BERSATU MP, Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan (PN-Tasek Gelugor) today asked the Dewan Rakyat to set up a committee to identify and penalise two Members of Parliament who allegedly attempted to influence him to support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He claimed the duo was Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (PN-Gua Musang) and Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (PN-Tanjong Karang), who are Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) members who had declared support for Anwar.

"These offers were made by Gua Musang (Mohd Azizi) along with two individuals known as Hasnan and Datuk Azman on Jan 17.

"Another offer was made by a man who introduced himself as a Datuk Rahim on Feb 26 after being introduced to me by Tanjong Karang (Zulkafperi)," he told the Dewan Rakyat.

He alleged that the offer included an RM2 million parliamentary allocation, payment for his wife’s medical expenses, an unspecified token sum to cover legal fees for his ongoing court case and the possibility of dropping the charges brought against him.

Wan Saiful said that the offer was an attempt to influence his behaviour and constitutes harassment, bribery and threats.

He proposed the committee be set up under Standing Order 80A to identify and penalise those who committed contempt of the House under Sections 9(d) and 9(e) of the Houses of Parliament (Privileges and Powers) Act 1952, or Act 347.

The sections outline contemptuous actions towards the authority, functions, and privileges of Parliament.

He said he made the proposal based on a precedent set by the late Bukit Gelugor MP, Karpal Singh.

Wan Saiful's proposal was supported by Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran) who explained how a parliamentary special committee was set up to probe a scuffle between Karpal and several Selangor Umno Youth members in 2009.

Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor told Wan Saiful to submit a motion to the speaker's office for further action as it involves serious allegations towards other MPs.

"I will submit the proposal and I hope we can all uphold the dignity and honour this house without interference from external parties," added Wan Saiful. - The Vibes, March 21, 2024
