ABOUT 30 tonnes of water has been dropped over the massive forest fires at the Sarawak-Brunei border but the peat fires continue to rage on.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department in its updated reports today said the Bombardier aircraft had carried out numerous drops.

"At least 30 tonnes of water had been dropped onto the hotspots and we are now fighting the fires from the air using aerial water bombing.

"We also used total flooding methods on the ground, but there are still peat fires burning in the deeper areas. We will continue with the water bombing," the department said.

Yesterday, it was reported that the forest fires raging at the Sarawak-Brunei border were burning beyond the 100 hectares mark, with a massive hotspot the size of roughly 220 football fields.

One hectare is 2.2 acres and a football field is about one acre.

About 120,000 people living in the Kuala Baram subdistrict near the Sarawak border with Brunei have been told to stop outdoor activities due to air pollution caused by the forest fires.

The Miri Fire and Rescue Department issued the advice three days ago, saying that dense smog was being blown from these wildfires.

The sky over the hotspots has also since turned yellow and grey. - The Vibes, March 28, 2024
