UMNO Youth chief Akmal Salleh was detained at the Kota Kinabalu police headquarters station this morning.
The controversial politician said on social media that he was arrested this morning but questioned the action as he was due to report to the Dang Wangi police station in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.
“God willing, I will give my full cooperation. I will not budge an inch from our stand,” said Akmal, likely in reference to the KK Mart boycott he inititated.
A video posted on Facebook showed Akmal smiling as he was driven away by the cops. His parting words were, "no fear, no surrender".
Akmal did not reveal the reason for his arrest. He has recently made headlines after he called for the boycott of KK Mart convenience stores after one of them were found to be selling socks imprinted with the word “Allah”.
The company has since issued an apology, but Akmal has continued to campaign for a boycott of the chain.
Anger at KK Mart has seen three of its outlets being struck with petrol bombs, the latest incident being in Kuching on Sunday.
The first and second incidents occurred in Perak on March 26 and and Pahang on March 29.
No arrests over the incidents have been made so far.
Sabah police commissioner Jauteh Dikun confirmed Akmal was detained at the state police headquarters.
“His statement is now being taken over sedition-related charges," he said.
Sabah Umno sources said Akmal, who is also a Malacca exco member, was in Sabah to attend a buka puasa event at an orphanage in Beaufort.
Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said in a statement that the police are investigating Akmal under sedition and communications and multimedia laws.
He added that the police had received two reports against Akmal. – April 5, 2024.
