A MAGISTRATE'S court has fined a car workshop owner RM4,000 in default of two weeks' jail, in Raub, Pahang, for failing to provide a sales quote to the customer before commencing work.

Malaysia Gazette reported that the workshop owner was found to have violated the Consumer Protection (Disclosure of Workshop Information) (Amendment) Regulations 2022.

Pahang Domestic Trade and Cost of Living enforcement director Jeslily Jamaludin said an investigation into the case was launched on August 18, 2022 after a complaint was filed.

It was revealed that the owner of a Toyota Hilux did not receive a written statement prior to the repair work being carried out and was not satisfied with the price after the work was completed, prompting the complaint.

The Consumer Protection (Workshops Information Disclosure) (Amendment) Regulations 2022 was gazetted on June 22, 2022, with enforcement to begin July 1 the same year. However, this was postponed for a year to allow stakeholders time to prepare for the change.

The regulations state that workshops must provide a list of their mechanics as well as their skill level or experience. Customers must also be given a sales quote for goods and services before work can commence. Those who violate the rules can be fined up to RM100,000 or jailed up to three years. – April 6, 2024.
