KOTA Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) has suspended all flights following the eruption of Mount Ruang in North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Airport manager Jeffrey Ramli said the airline companies will issue statements for further clarification.

"Yes, flights have been stopped due to the volcanic eruption. All airlines have ceased flying today, and they will clarify the matter soon," he said.

The KKIA airport controller office said 19 flights to various destinations were affected by the suspension.

It could not be ascertained when the flights would resume and how many passengers were affected.

Indonesian authorities issued a tsunami alert after Mount Ruang erupted several times since Tuesday night, according to reports.

Mount Ruang, a stratovolcano, erupted at 9.45pm on Tuesday and four more times on Wednesday, spewing a two-kilometre long column of smoke into the sky and forcing hundreds of people to evacuate their homes. – April 18, 2024.
