Single border agency from May 1, says Anwar

MALAYSIA'S borders will now be under the management and control of a single agency called the Malaysia Checkpoints and Border Agency (MCBA), Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said today.

The agency started its duties yesterday but the law governing the agency would only be tabled in Parliament in July, he added.

"The MCBA's source of power is with the existing agencies under it, such as the police, Customs Department and the Immigration Department.

"Therefore, all departments without exception must accept this instruction seriously and act now," he said in his speech at the Home Ministry's Aidilfitri celebration in Putrajaya today.

The MCBA will coordinate and ensure smooth and secure control of Malaysia's borders.

Earlier, Anwar witnessed the terms of reference handing-over ceremony between the Home Ministry and partners under the MCBA.

In a statement, the Home Ministry said the cabinet had agreed on the establishment of MCBA on April 17.

Among others, agencies and departments involved in MCBA include the police, the Customs Department, the Immigration Department, the Health Ministry, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and the Road Transport Department. – The Vibes, May 2, 2024.
